How to Identify Any Font from an Image, Screenshot, or PDF

Every designer and web developer has been there: you stumble across a stunning logo, book cover, product packaging, or website graphic, and you desperately need to know what typeface was used.

Step 1: Capture or Crop a High-Resolution Sample

The most important factor in AI font recognition is image clarity. If you're on a computer, use shortcut Win + Shift + S (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + 4 (Mac) to capture the text cleanly. You can paste it directly into Ai Font Detector using Ctrl + V.

Step 2: Level Baseline Tilt & Boost Contrast

If your image is taken from a phone camera or angled photo, use our embedded Angle Leveling slider to rotate the text until the baseline is completely horizontal. Next, boost the Contrast slider to 130%–160% to cleanly separate letter outlines from complex backgrounds.

Step 3: Isolate Characters with the Bounding Box

Move the bounding box over a clean word containing diagnostic letters like a, g, R, or e. In typography, these letters contain unique anatomical traits:

  • Single-story vs double-story 'a' and 'g'
  • Curved vs straight leg on uppercase 'R'
  • Horizontal vs angled aperture cuts on lowercase 'e'

Step 4: Check Free Google Font Twins

If the detected font is a proprietary commercial typeface (such as Circular Std or Helvetica Now), Ai Font Detector automatically provides an exact 1-to-1 free Google Fonts alternative like Plus Jakarta Sans or Inter Variable.
